Iron Horse Triathlon History
North Platte is synonymous with trains. The Iron Man Triathlon is the sport’s most famous
race. It just made sense to call a summer triathlon in North Platte, Nebraska, “Iron Horse”, linking the sport with the
community’s history. The name was actually the brain child of cyclist and event supporter Paul
Brasby.
The Iron Horse Triathlon was part of the original “fitness challenges” developed by the members of Healthy for Life, North Platte’s citizen wellness advocacy organization.
The Great Plains Regional Medical Center’s Iron Horse Triathlon saw its inaugural event on August 21, 2005. The first year the triathlon held both sprint and Olympic distances. The race included the use of beautiful Cody Pool, Cody Park, and a scenic bike ride north of North Platte toward the Sandhills. The bike portion of the race included the now renowned, “Twin Lakes Hill”, giving triathletes a bigger challenge to grow from.
The second year, the race director made participation and fitness encouragement the event’s top priority, so the distances were changed to
Sprint and Super
Sprint. The Super Sprint distance was added to encourage budding triathletes to give the sport a try with a distance that is “do-able” with modest training. The Sprint distance is slightly longer than the James O’Rourke Memorial Triathlon to encourage those who have mastered that distance to go just a little further.
Great Plains Regional Medical Center has been on board from day one, and provides not only financial support, but supporting volunteers as well. GPRMC has supported all the community’s fitness events, and continually demonstrates its dedication to the health and well-being of the citizens it serves. We are honored to share GPRMC’s vision for a healthy, active community.
The Iron Horse Triathlon is part of the new
Platte River Fitness
Series, developed to encourage the concept that fitness is a way of life. Participants are encourage to KEEP GOING with their fitness routines and healthy living changes as they take on each event in the series.
